JACKSONVILLE CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE JOSHUA HICKS CALLS FOR A LOCAL HOUSING EMERGENCY TO ADDRESS AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS

Hicks Calls Out City Hall’s Shameful Inaction as Rent Prices Skyrocket

ARLINGTON – The people of Jacksonville have faced skyrocketing rent prices in 2021 and 2022, with an average increase of 31% in 2021, and increases as much as 61% in Arlington. Last week, Florida was named the least affordable state to live in the country with Jacksonville among the cities driving unaffordability.

Today in Arlington, which has faced some of the highest local rent increases, Jacksonville City Council candidate Joshua Hicks called for a local housing emergency to address the growing affordable housing crisis. Hicks released the following statement addressing the shameful inaction of Finance Committee Chair Ron Salem and the Jacksonville City Council:

“The time for inaction is over as Jacksonville families continue to be devastated by this crippling affordable housing crisis. I am calling for a local housing emergency that spurs immediate action by City Hall. Our city officials have sat on their hands by shamefully looking the other way while families suffer from out-of-control rent prices. There is plenty that can be done on the local level if our elected officials would do the right thing and choose to listen to their constituents. We must make affordable housing a high priority.”

By treating the affordable housing crisis as an emergency, Jacksonville can pursue commonsense and effective solutions, such as:

  • Streamlining zoning and permitting ordinances to address inventory shortages
  • Unlocking federal, state, and local funds for housing programs and assistance
  • Reviewing unused city-owned property to identify candidates for multi-family units
  • Directing new developments to include a percentage of affordable units
